Preparing for flooding – Free Flood Warden training

Flood Warden TrainingTonbridge and Malling residents are invited to attend free Flood Warden Training at Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council’s offices in Kings Hill on Saturday 30 November from 10am to 12 noon.

Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, Kent Highways, the Environment Agency and Kent Police each have clearly defined roles in responding to a flooding emergency in the borough, but having Flood Wardens within a community can significantly reduce damage to homes and possessions, reduce risk to life and help limit the effects on other issues such as mental health.

The training course, which is free of charge, will give attendees the knowledge and skills to help in a flooding emergency. On completion of the course attendees will have the choice to become a Flood Warden - an important role in helping to prevent flooding by working with authorities to draw up community flood plans that identify properties at risk and what can be done to protect them. They can also help make residents aware of the risk of flooding, ensure people receive and understand flood warnings and provide a vital link between the local community and emergency responders.

Robert Styles, Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council’s Director of Street Scene, Leisure and Technical Services says “In the event of a flood emergency community volunteers play an important role as their local knowledge is invaluable. I would urge residents living in flood risk areas to come along to the training to find out more about the vital role they can play in providing a co-ordinated local response and resilience to flooding at all times.”
