Recycling update

Published: 09 July 2021

Further to the collections update provided earlier this week, we can confirm that today we have received assurances from Urbaser that the recent short-term suspension of kerbside recycling services will end this Friday as originally planned. Urbaser has advised that its recruitment drive for additional drivers has been successful enough to reinstate the green-lidded bin & green box services from Monday 12 July, as well as to provide sufficient support vehicles to help deal with the build up of recycling which has accumulated over the past couple of weeks. As such, here is the text for the Waste Updates page which will be published tomorrow, together with social media posts alerting residents to the reinstatement of services (an email is also being sent to all of our Garden Waste subscribers alerting them to the resumption of services):

Unfortunately we have recently needed to temporarily suspend recycling collections of green-lidded bins and green boxes. Full services will be resumed from Monday 12 July.

The reason for the temporary suspension given by our contactor, Urbaser, is the national shortage of HGV drivers which is affecting its ability to retain and recruit drivers. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience. Although a recent recruitment drive and a number of related actions has meant that driver numbers have increased sufficiently to reinstate recycling services, if you know qualified HGV drivers that are looking for work, please ask them to apply.

As of Monday 12 July, the recycling collections will start up again:

Week commencing 12 July

• If your black bin is due for collection, put this out along with your food bin

• If it is your recycling week, put out your green lidded bin and green box along with your food bin

• Only put out the correct bins for the scheduled collection

Week commencing 19th July

• If your black bin is due for collection, put this out along with your food bin

• If it is your recycling week, put out your green lidded bin and green box along with your food bin

• Put your garden bin out on your normal scheduled collection day

• Only put out the correct bins for the scheduled collection

If your recycling bin is full you can continue to use the recycling sites across the borough. We have installed temporary cardboard/paper banks at the following sites:

• Sainsbury’s (Angel Centre car park) Tonbridge

• Longmead (Tonbridge Farm Sports Ground)

• Asda Kings Hill

• Borough Green railway station

• Larkfield Leisure Centre

Please remember to flatten cardboard boxes down and remove polystyrene and plastic. Waste must not be left beside the banks. These temporary extra banks will be in place until Friday 23 July
